French

Bonjour!

Welcome to French. French is scheduled to be completed on 2019-11-24

French is 4% finished

We should start with some basics

1. Bonjour - Hello
2. Comment - How
3.  l'ail - garlic
4. fille - girl
5. homme - man

Now our goal here is to speak to locals with understandable speech. We will also be crafting sentences and maybe even be able to write a paragraph! The 5 words here should give you some knowledge of basic words.

We will join your sentence goal and we will craft a French sentence with you!

Task 1:

Eng. Hello, how are you today?
Fr. Bonjour, comment _____________?
We found only 2 words of this sentence. Now it is your job to grab a dictionary and try to craft this sentence. GO!

Next Lesson: Actual meanings

Lesson 2: Actual meanings

If you have no experience in French whatsoever, then you probably came up with: Bonjour, comment sont vous aujourd'hui? or Bonjour, comment est tu aujourd'hui? or something along those lines. If you got " Bonjour, comment vas tu aujourd'hui" or " Bonjour, comment ça va aujourd'hui? " Then you are correct! Like many languages, you don't translate the exact meaning of the English sentence to create the other languages sentence.

Ex. I am 70 years old - J'ai 70 ans - I have 70 years

I am 70 years old is what you are trying to say.
J'ai 70 ans is how you say it in French
I have 70 years is the literal/actual translation.

Always be aware of these and take notes if you ever see any during these lessons. They will be pointed out at times.

Lesson 3: Present en avoir

J'ai                           Nous avons
Tu as                        Vous avez
Il/Elle/On a              Ils/Elles ont

Translation:

I have               We have
You have          You all have
He/She/We have   They ( masc )/ They ( fem ) have

So basically we can summarize it into:

1st person singular    1st person plural
2nd person singular  2nd person plural
3rd person singular   3rd person plural

In French ( Present ), verb ending will always change according to the subject pronoun.

Ex. Je dors, j'aime, tu aimes, tu dors

But in the example, 1st person singular ( Je dors ) does not have the same ending as 1st person singular ( J'aime ), same with 1st person singular (J'ai).
Task 2: Without looking anything up, take a guess and explain why they don't have the same ending even though they all have the same subject pronoun.

Lesson 4: Verbs

The verbs fall into 4 groups
1. Verbes en ER
2. Verbes en IR
3. Verbes en RE
4. Les verbes irreg.

Today we will concentrate on ER verbs and how they are conjugated. ER verbs are verbs that end with ER

ex. to eat - MangER
Verbs like these are conjugated as:

Je mange          Nous mangeons
Tu manges         Vous mangez
il/elle/on mange  Ils/Elles mangent

or to jump - sauter

Je saute - I am jumping
Tu sautes - You are jumping
Il/Elle/On saute - He/She/We are jumping
Nous sautons - We are jumping
Vous sautez - You (all) are jumping
Ils/Elles sautent - They (masc)/They (fem) are jumping

We can see that "Nous sautons" is missing the extra "e" that "Nous mangeons" has. Why is that?

Task 3: Without looking it up, take a guess on why "Nous sautons" is missing the extra "e"

Lesson 5: Verbes en ER

Les verbes en ER fall into lots of categories. We will review only the major ones.

1. Regular ER verbs (90 % of French verbs)
2.  CER verbs
3. GER verbs

Today we will start with Regular ER verbs.

Regular ER verbs are conjugated like sauter is conjugated. Sauter is a regular ER verb so it's conjugated like almost every other French verb.

Je saute
Tu sautes
*Il saute
Nous sautons
Vous sautez
**Ils sautent

* To describe the 3rd person singular and 3rd person plural verbs, I will be using " Il(s) "
**Elles is for a group of women and Ils is for a group of men. When talking about a group of men and women, we use Ils to describe them.

Porter
Parler
Doler
Briser
Saluer

Task 4: Try to conjugate these 5 verbs without any help

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Lesson 6: Verbes en ER continued

Here are the answers to your fourth task:

Tu brises
Il brise
Nous brisons
Vous brisez
Ils brisent

Saluer
Je salue
Tu salues
Il salue
Nous saluons
Vous saluez
Ils saluent

If you got them all correct you finally understand Les verbes ER en présent

Here is a little bit of a challenge:

Le dimanche, nous aimons nous promener en famille dans la forêt proche de notre maison et faire des jeux. Nous jouons dans le jardin quand il fait beau ou à la plage quand il fait trop chaud.

Task 5: Try to find ER verbs conjugated in this paragraph.
Task 6: After finding your ER verbs, look in the dictionary for each word and try to understand what this paragraph is talking about. A
